Finding My Creativity

It's been awhile since I've updated my blog...sorry! I've been re-adjusting to my kids being out of the house and trying to come up with new creative designs.

One of the things I want to get back to are making pieces that come from the heart, pieces that represent something important in my life. So here's a picture of the Triple Moon pendant that I recently made and will be listing in my shop soon. This one is made using a lab grown Alexandrite set in fine silver.

Also, I'm so excited to announce that I successfully taught myself how to solder fine metals...woot woot!! Up until now all of my previous attempts ended in some messy glob, so I'm happy to show off these new rings that I made for myself out of scrap sterling, one is a London Blue Topaz, and the other is a Signity CZ.

I swear after that first successful solder I couldn't stop myself. Before I knew it, it was 2am and my focus was blurry but dangit I made 8 rings and all of them turned out great! Actually that's a fib -- the next day when I looked at the rings again one of the wide band rings was not to my liking because the solder and flowed into part of the pattern...so it's scrap now and I don't care cuz the rest of the rings turned out fab!! :D

Hopefully after I practice a bit more I'll start getting some of these listed in my Etsy shop so keep an eye out!

Rings and Ritual

Here's another fine silver ring! I really struggled with a name to call them. I've made one for my friend, so a Friendship Knot. I've made 2 for my son to give to his girlfriend as both Forget Me Knot and Love Me Knot rings. So as of right now in light of Valentine's Day they are called Love Me Knot rings, but the title may change as I don't want them to be perceived as just a holiday gift.

Imbolc is upon us, and I haven't decided how I will celebrate this Sabbat. I had planned on making some candles (in honor of Brighid) but I'm finding that my time is very limited to do so between my day job, and my personal business. I think I'll make some bread with seeds to symbolize growth, it'll have to be in my breadmaker as my time is restricted but the intent is the same and I have plenty of cheese to enjoy with the bread :) I may plant some little seedlings to represent my hopes and dreams for the coming summer months. Hmm...I think I've just decided on how I will celebrate Imbolc....Yay!

Ohh and another celebration........Mercury is direct......FINALLY!! *Happy Dance*

Fusing - Take Two

Okay so today was much more successful than yesterday. I'm still having troubles with fusing larger sized rings not gauge but actual size. I've posted some pictures here to show you the results.
I've got my rings laid out on my ceramic tile ready to be fused.

The results after fusing 4 different sized rings, the larger ring on the far left did not fuse.

After hammering them for texture, I put them in my tumbler and here's the result:

I just made a few more so when I'm done here I will actually hammer them flat to be used in necklaces and earrings. I really am pleased at how they turned out and I can't wait to see what fun things I can create using this technique!

Consignment

For those of us who make and sell handcrafted items, we often sell in multiple venues at once. For me, everything is online as of right now, but there are often offers of consignment. I was recently approached again to sell my jewelry in someones B&M boutique. Though it was very tempting, I graciously declined. I wanted to share my reasons why and to share some tips that I've learned.

Read the contract very closely...and for goodness sakes read the fine print. I know you're very excited at the prospect of getting your products out there, but look before you leap!

Where is the B&M store located? It's better if you can keep tabs on your product, easier to restock and to keep in contact with the store in general. But, there have been successful consignment agreements where the store and designer are great distances apart.

What is the agreed consignment ratio? Is it 70/30, 60/40 or 50/50? The higher numbers should represent what you, the creator, should receive after your item has sold. Personally I would never sell at a 50/50 ratio, but that's just me.

Who is liable if your items are damaged or stolen? This is very important to me, and has been a deal breaker. I personally feel that if I take the time to insure my products for delivery, that while they are in the hands of the seller, store, or boutique, it then becomes their responsibility should something happen to my product. Many stores have insurance to cover just that, so be sure to check on it and ask if it's not in the contract.

Do you as the designer still retain your ownership rights? You will find that sometimes the seller does not want you to include your website or other personal information about you because it may draw business away from their store, understandable...BUT...I feel that you should at least be able to have your business name or logo on your product. After all, YOU are the designer.

What is the term of the contract? Sometimes there is a trial period, make sure you read this closely as well. At the end of this term what happens? Who's responsible for packing up your stock and returning them back to you? There are many times when it is your responsibility, and when you live across the country from the store, this is not a viable option.

How often will you receive payment? This is often done once a month on a particular day and is done by check. Find out if you have to include stamped envelopes for them to send your payments to you. This can sometimes be hidden in the contract somewhere too.

How do they want you to present your items? Do they want you to make certain labels, use certain price tags verses another type, boxes, display cases? This can be a lot of extra work if the store is requiring that you package/display your items differently than what you usually do.

A few other things are to make sure you take a copy of the signed contract, check out the store (look them up at the Better Business Bureau), ask for references. If your not happy with something in the contract, ask if it can be adjusted. If you see that something is missing, ask and most of all trust your gut feeling!! Even then, sometimes the best intentions with both parties can go south.

I'm not trying to be a "negative Nancy" here, but I think that we all have to protect what we have worked so hard to make. I will eventually do consignments, but it's a matter of finding the right fit, both with the B&M store and the contract. For now though, I'm content with where I'm at, I've found my happy place so to speak....I hope you can too!

Buzz, Buzz, Buzz

I have got a major creative bug right now! I'm buzzing back and forth from my jewelers bench, to my computer, outside to take the photos, back to my bench...just a buzz, buzz, buzzing around. I have so many more new things that I want to make and list. I figure I better take advantage of this now, I can't tell you how many times I have sat at my bench just blankly staring at all the metal and stones, trying to figure out what I was going to make next. I would assume it's quite similar to writer's block...I hate it when that happens.

So here's a new bracelet that I listed today, and hopefully I'll be able to get some meditation/prayer beads made by this weekend. Sales have been a bit slow on Etsy, but I'm definitely keeping busy. I'm off to make some earrings now!

Just a quick post of a couple more new pieces that I've added today. I've got some more that I'll list tomorrow but I have a custom necklace to finish first!

New Additions

I just wanted to share some new creations that I added to my store today. I received some new stamps in the mail so I quickly made a pair of earrings in preparation for Valentine's Day. They're dainty and lightweight...I loved them so much I had to make myself a pair :)

I recently bought a string of the deepest blue Labradorite also known as Spectrolite. I'm not really sure what I'll do with all of them, but this necklace definitely wanted to be made. Just a simple design that allows the stone to speak for itself.

I have so many ideas rolling around in my head like all the stamped jewelry I can make, fusing fine silver, and working with PMC. I'm hoping to get everything purchased within this next week, so I can put my mind to rest. I think that's the worst part of creating....thinking of all these fabulous things you can make, then having to wait until you can buy everything you need to bring them to fruition....I better buy it soon, so I can start getting some sleep at night.

Back to this...

I'm back to making my handmade boxes for orders that are going out this next week. I ordered my kraft boxes back on the 15th and haven't heard hide nor hair of them since. I tried contacting Nile Corp today to no avail, so I sent them an email in hopes that I hear from them soon! It's frustrating when you think you've ordered your supplies in time to find that for some reason or another things get all snafu'd and don't go the way you had planned...such is life :)

Don't get me wrong...I love making these boxes because of that little extra touch of handmade. BUT, there's definitely something to be said when you've found a way of packaging your handmade goodies that represents both you and your business. It took me awhile to do just that, and I found it in all aspects including the design, natural colors and textures.

Who would've thought that I would be so concerned about packaging when I started this business? Let me tell you though, the packaging is like meeting someone for the first time....it's all about making a good first impression. At least that's the way I look at it. Many would probably argue that they bought the product not the packaging....true....but just imagine how you would feel if you just spent your hard earned money on a spendy piece of jewelry only to have it come in an envelope wrapped in paper. That tells me that the seller doesn't care enough about their items to either protect it or present it well. Think of it (packaging) as just another way of marketing your business. You never know who may end up with it...word of mouth can be very lucrative :)

WOW!

Really there aren't a lot of words to describe it. You're probably wondering what I'm talking about right? Well I'm talking about my sales on Etsy. The day before my 1 year Etsy anniversary on September 1st, I reached 100 sales. I was so ecstatic because I had reached my goal. So I set up the same goal for 2009 to reach 200 sales. Low and behold, I'm 1 sale away from that goal just 3 months into my 2nd year *Happy Dance!!*

So I'm now thinking of what I will give as a gift for this milestone....I may give an initial pendant (pictured in my previous post), along with tea, and a 15% coupon for future purchases. I'll have to put more thought into it though as it takes 2 days to create the pendants.

I'm just so very thankful...it has been a crazy busy month so far, but I wouldn't want it any other way! So I'm sending a big shout out to my fabulous customers....You all have been so wonderful, I couldn't be more blessed, thank you so much!!

Have a Merry Christmas!

Busy Creating

Here's what I've been creating lately as gifts for the girls at work and for the women in my family for Christmas. The pearls are larger than what I wanted them to be...it gives the pendant more of a peekaboo effect with the initial stamping. I had a great time oxidizing them then using steel wool to give them a slight patina.

I'll try to post more about the oxidation technique later...super easy and I'm sure for those of you that read the how to's it's not going to be anything new, but I created a little trick that I'd like to share with you in a later post.

This will probably be my last post until after the holidays so I wish everyone a Very Merry Christmas and a Safe and Happy New Year!!

Handmade Gifts for Christmas

I have a lot of people to buy for so these last few years I've been making gifts for my family, friends and co-workers. I always make some type of jewelry gift for all of the women, but for the men...well they don't really do jewelry (at least not the ones in my little circle) so they tend to get bought gifts. Though I am making polar fleece throw blankets for my boys...they've been wanting them for awhile now after I made one for one of their girlfriends. It's really easy, just buy the polar fleece fabric in whatever length you want them in. Buy 2, one can have a pattern and the other can be a solid color. Pin the fabric together right side facing out. Cut strips along the outside edge of the entire blanket, 2" wide by 4" in length, and tie each set of 2 strips (front and back together) in a double knot. Voila...super easy! If I didn't explain myself well, just post a comment and I'll help you out.

This year for the women, I'm making hand stamped Initial Pendants with Pearls and Birthstones. I just purchased my stamps and sterling silver tags and can't wait to get started on them. In a sense it's a 2for1 deal, I bought the items to make for gifts BUT I'll be able to use them for my jewelry business. I'm looking forward to start listing some of these pendants in my store.

Stackable Rings

I was messing around today and purely by accident made some new rings. I've named them Rustic Lil Dollops. They're made fusing 18g sterling silver wire, slightly hammering them for texture, then I do a little something extra to create a brushed satin finish. These rings are so cute and dainty with that little bit of rustic charm found in the slight imperfections.

Each ring is made to order in any size ranging from 1 to 16. Currently they are being sold individually, in a pair and in a set of three. I will probably list them in larger sets in the near future. I'm going to make myself a set of 4 or 5 tonight to see how they wear...can't wait!

ShopHandmade Email

I just got an email from them...and I just had to share an excerpt of it with you! This is just another reason why I love their site :)

We did it! ShopHandmade crossed its first major milestone by listing 5,000 items for sale in our first month after opening! We chose to celebrate the event by planting 5,000 trees – one for each product listed. As they take root and flourish, we hope that this early success will echo forever in their leaves and branches.

Not just any ring

I make wire wrapped rings....but I wanted to learn how to make the prong style...and had no clue how to go about it. Well one night while browsing through Etsy...I stumbled upon MyWiredImagination. A wonderful artist who's wire wrapped jewelry is impeccable... and sells prong ring tutorials and kits. These kits come with everything you need including the stone, she also has upgrades available if you fancy a different size, color or type of stone. I awaited anxiously for my kit to arrive (I received the tutorial by pdf format in an email and the supplies were sent to me). Well I received my supplies yesterday...and decided I would make my ring this morning. The picture above is the result!!! I just love how it turned out...her tutorial is awesome and very easy to follow. The lavender stone is large and gorgeous! I couldn't be happier with the results and I'm so very thankful for sellers like her who don't mind sharing their wire wrapping designs!
Thank you Bobbi....I enjoyed everything about the step by step tutorial, the pictures you included and will cherish my ring for many years to come!

Wow!

I can't believe it's been nearly a month since I've posted in my blog. I knew it had been awhile...but not that long! Man how time flies....when you're having fun. It's been a busy month on Etsy, and outside of it. My boys made it to the state baseball quarter finals, but got beat out. Next is summer ball, and in a few weeks they're off to an MLB scouting camp....should be interesting. I'm not sure how they feel, but I'm sure in the heck nervous for them. I'll be lucky if I have any nails left after it!

I start part time next month, long story short, car accident, back injury and haven't been able to return to work full time since (I've been temporarily part time). I'm truly thankful for my employers though...they've stuck with me through these last 4 years and have created a position so I can stay there. With the economy the way it is...still having a job has lifted a huge burden off of my shoulders.

I've created some new pieces which I've scattered around in this post, feel free to click on the picture for further information on the jewelry. You'll notice that one of the bracelets is almost exactly like the "Grow" bracelet in my previous post, I decided to make a couple more. Soon I'll be selling a copy of the spiral link bracelet with the labradorite briolette (also in the previous post). I've revamped the photos of the Beauty Within Chakra pendant, so that listing is also included here. I was a Fashion Spotlight feature at Talentdatabase.com....wow, I couldn't believe the requests and feedback from just that one feature...woohoo!

Anyways, I'll try to keep posting often, but life tends to go at it's own flow and sometimes it doesn't allow me to be on the computer as much as I'd like...darnit anyways!

Tuesday, April 1, 2008

Well, I've listed a couple more pendants to the link above. It's been a slow going process, and I just haven't been really motivated to make more jewelry...what is wrong with me?! I have all of these ideas/designs in my head but today I just couldn't sit down and work with anything. So, I've written my ideas down and hopefully tomorrow my head will be in a better place to start creating some new designs.

Here's a couple pics of my "new" Spiral Collection...I tossed around a few titles...Around the World In A Day...Orbit...and many others, but none of them really clicked. I just wanted the name to be a description of the design. I normally have the easiest time with names...but for some reason this was not one of those times. I've had these pendants made since Saturday...and I finally settled on Spiral last night. It really is a sweet and simple design...I love how quickly they can be interchanged to match anything you wear.
